Energy Loss Through Windows

Energy escapes through windows in 4 different ways:

• Conduction:

  The transfer of thermal energy through the window as a result of colliding molecules.

• Radiation:

  The transfer of thermal energy through infared wavelengths.

• Air Leakage:

  Air escapes through cracks and gaps in the window.

• Convection:

  Energy transfer resulting from the warm inside air passing energy to the cooler window glass. As that energy escapes it causes the inside air to become cooler and therefore drop allowing more warm air to take its place, this cycle is called a convection stream and causes a draft.
